This is an example of a Hitachi (HGST) hard drive that sustained firmware corruption, where the drive no longer works correctly, consequently the drive is completely inaccessible.
This a rare type of failure, but it does every now and then.
There is nothing end users could do to prevent this type of problem from happening.
