Thoughts on Recovering Deleted Files on MacBooks aka "files disappeared"

Like other SSD data recovery companies, we receive many inquiries about recovering deleted files from MacBook computers that somehow disappeared. Our technicians performed solid state drive data recovery from MacBooks many times in this kind of scenarios.

Likely the files are unrecoverable, Why?

Since approximately 2012, Apple has introduced Solid State Drive storage in their MacBooks lineup. Some MacBook Air models, began using SSDs as early as 2008.

With the goal of optimizing users' experience with regard to speed and storage efficiency, modern Solid State Drives employ TRIM and Garbage Collection functions, which run automatically in the background at all times.

Upon detecting the files are deleted in the metadata of the file system, TRIM and Garbage Collection begin wiping the allocated space for the respective "deleted files", thus making the files unrecoverable. In that condition, the name of files may still show in the file system (probably still cached somewhere in the catalog file), but the content inside the file is gone due to wiping.

You may be wondering why "we think your files folders/files are deleted". Our data recovery technicians think so based on a lot of experience with these kinds of hard drive formatting and deletion scenarios.

Files hardly ever simply disappear. The files feel like they disappeared, because we, as individuals, are not able to associate an action correlating with them disappearing. But usually something happens causing some kind of file deletion, such as:

-User error

-Operating System error (MacOS)

-Syncing software

-Other software bugs

-SSD formatting

etc.

The only way to confirm the outcome 100% is to do the work, which is basically performing a full recovery entailing:

-Imaging the data from your hard drive to another healthy drive

-Running data recovery software scans with various tools to see if we find the files

-If found, extracting the recoverable files to a new USB storage

For our data recovery experts, it is virtually the same amount of work and data recovery process, whether we find & recover the files or not.

If you would like us to attempt the recovery, then it will probably be $500. This data recovery fee is upfront and non-refundable whether the files recovery is successful or not.

You may want to check in other areas for the files, such as:

-Any external drives you may have copied or backed up the files to (e.g. Time Machine Backup)

-iCloud or other cloud storage, such as Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.
